well this wasn't flowers and barely could be called landscape so it went here. hand held by my feet, my focus points were off yet again, but i like it. Attachments:

Try manually setting your focus about a third of the way into the frame. With enough depth of field, you will see sharpness front to back. This looks like another case of the AF picking the wrong target.

yeah i may also drag out the tripod. I will give the manual focus a shot since i may be going back next weekend

My question would be-what part were you trying to focus on?...I get some like this, I'm going for the comp of the rocks and the flow of the water and it is in manual but one or the other is out of focus, it seems... The part that is in focus looks good!

yeah really i could crop this and get part of what i was looking for, but with it held down at my feet it was a bit hard to see where my focus was. I am gonna try Gregs idea of manual focus at 1/3rd frame and see what happens. now that I have an idea of what the image will turn out like I can go back and really woirk out this spot. with a tripod i can also try several shutter speeds and maybe get something cool.

What Greg said... Try the shots with a narrower aperture. Give yourself a longer DoF.

Yes, as said, narrower aperture will get you a longer dof, plus it will buy you some more shutter time.
