Hi there
I've been doing some thinking lately and I can't afford all the separate lens' that are out there so I was thinking is the 50mm lens a good all rounder?
Any advice greatly received ;D

I use my 50mm f/14 lens a lot. It 's generally on one of my two cameras most of the time. It just depends on what you plan to use it for. There applications for a 50mm focal length and lots that it doesn't work for.

If you are wanting an all rounder, don't get a prime. Actually, let me put it this way....DON'T get a prime lens. If you can only have one lens, you need a superzoom which covers lots of focal lengths. I don't know what you are shooting with, but most have an 18-200mm or something close. That gives you the most used focal lengths, and is usually designed for a cropped frame camera (digital only).
If you purchase a prime, you will spend the same or more over the superzoom, and you will be limited to zooming in and out with your feet. You will also miss out on perspective choices in your photography. Primes are great lenses, and can rarely be beat by zooms. However, for your purposes, you are not going for top notch optics, you are wanting something that will be functional attached to your camera body all the time. The superzoom is your best choice.
Also check out Sigma and Tamron, I think they have 18-300mm lenses for all the popular mounts. Image stabilization is pretty standard on these lenses as well which is a great thing since they are not all that fast.

Thanks for your comments. I already have a zoom, think its 17-200 What I'm ideally wanting is a lens for landscapes, however I cannot afford a wide angle lens cos of the cost - from what I can see they're about £300 plus and I don't have that type of money. I thought I'd read that the prime lens could be used for landscapes, portraits etc etc so thought if this was so I'd get that one for now until I can afford an actual wide angled lens. I think I'm wrong in thinking this though

You have wide angle in your zoom lens already. Most of my landscape shots are done with two of my lenses. A 17-40mm and a 24-70mm. You have these focal ranges covered.
There is nothing special about a prime, or wide angle lens. You have those focal ranges covered so there is no need to get another lens unless you are wanting better optical quality, or faster speed.
If you get the 50mm, you will get a faster aperture, but this is not a great landscape focal length. It is good for portraiture, and the aperture will help you out. I would say stick with what you have until you learn more about lenses and what they can do for you.
