Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been lurking, but haven't much felt like posting lately. This year started out kind of rough for me, and I'm having to devote a lot of time and energy to get back on track.
On the 2nd day of the new year, I went out on a Trek and after getting some really good images, I was hiking back to the truck and found some ice which had been packed snow earlier in the morning. I promptly slipped and fell smack on my ass. I bruised my elbow and left hip, but I have yet to really care about that.
I had my camera with the 10-22mm attached to the tripod which was being carried over my shoulder. when I went down, so did the camera. I tried everything that I could to keep it off the ground, but ice falls are not exactly slow motion. The camera stayed attached to the tripod and looked to be ok except for a bit of dirt on the upper left corner, and a smudge on the rubber door to the remote shutter release.
I got up and turned the camera on. It came on just fine and appeared to be working fine. I looked through the viewfinder and could see that the lens was not focusing. I tried manual and auto with no success. The focus ring felt stiff so I looked closer. What I found was the lens barrel itself was broken at the focus ring. It was no longer a straight cylinder, but appeared more like a tilt shift lens. I tried to pop it back together, but no go...there was something loose rattling around inside.
I switched over to another lens (everything in my Tamrac survived) and ran the camera through some tests. It acted fine. About a week later though, the remote quit working presumably due to the impact on the plugged in remote. The socket is now loose, so I imagine there is some internal issues on this port.
I have talked with insurance, but they are talking repair estimates. There are no repair shops out here so I would have to send it to Canon for 2 weeks. It still works, so I hate to be without it that long.
My intention is to upgrade to the 5DMII which will eliminate the need for the 10-22mm which was lost. I've got everything picked out that I will need, but the price tag comes to $3055.83. This is not good because I have most of my money spoken for until summer.
So there is where I am currently. I hope to be back up fully functional in a few months. Until then, I am limping with my 40D sans ultra wide capability.
Here is an example of some of what I have with the injured camera.
