After two of the weirdest flakeouts I've experienced in my flakeout-filled life, I had my third shoot with 16yo Nicole, a young but very determined model. Her portfolio is filled largely with fashion and glamour, often with a very gentle and soft tone, so this time I wanted to push her envelope with some different looks. The most radical change for Nicole was to put her in full scuba gear. She's a thin and unathletic girl. She weighs 109 lbs and the gear weighed about 70-80. She was clearly out of her comfort zone and was clearly daunted at times, but she didn't complain a bit. The lighting on this shot was strange. I'd never done this before. This was part of a sunset series, but instead of using a speedlight for heavy fill I used an AlienBees AB800 on a very long extension cord. Instead of a softbox (which I should have used) I used an 8" dish with a warming filter. Attachments:

Yeah, that was a load for her. When we moved back into the house, I had to walk behind her and hold up the tank. Otherwise it would have pulled her right over and she'd have been like a turtle stranded on its shell. To her credit, she didn't complain. When I borrowed the gear from my friend, I was expecting an empty tank ( much lighter than a filled tank) but I wasn't about to complain. All of the gear Nicole had on is older than her and it shows its age. There's a certain appeal to old, worn gear, but I originally envisioned the scuba look a couple of years ago as a colorful high-key look and I still hope to do that. The original model (up in Seattle) was a very beautiful Punk grrrl -- her hair was fire-engine red with touches of black. I had a dive shop up there that agreed to let us use their facilities and their suits and equipment. Women's wetsuits tend to be very colorful, with pastel panels and broad stripes. Tanks and hoses come in all kinds of dazzling colors. It would be a fascinating combination of beauty and technology... and I just like women in wetsuits.

Yep, when you go out to the popular dive sites now you see a lot of colors with brand names, "Scubapro", "U.S. Divers", etc. Hey, any SCUBA related photo is a good photo!
