I participated in a most fascinating shoot Sunday. It was a group-shoot (my first) for a new biker-oriented website and business. I was second-shooter. We had two photographers, three makeup artists and ten models. Another first for me: I tried a 300-watt inverter connected to my car's power, allowing me to use the Alien Bees studio lighting (well, at least one of them) out in the country, miles from the nearest power outlet. This is going to add a whole new dimension to shooting on location. A storm had blown through the day before and the broken weather turns out to be a blessing. We got rained on lightly a few times, but the broken skies truly made our pictures. This first one was at the end of the shoot. The girl is a Czech model. The lighting: A single strobe with softbox with a warming reflector for fill. With the sunset at the twelve o'clock position and the camera at six, the softbox was four o'clock and the reflector was eight o'clock. Attachments:

In addition to the models, we had a 63-year-old biker with his bike, to provide a setting for the models. He didn't mind a bit! Different model here. Lighting was a single strobe with a 22-inch beauty dish. Attachments:

Back to the Czech model. I love the contrast in the textures of their faces. I'll be cropping this down to an 8x10, to trim off that unfortunate lower-left corner. Attachments:

It wasn't all stormy darkness and moody angles, though. We did do some group shots. This wasn't the group shot, however. The primary shooter was doing the group shot and I was doing the "meta-shots" -- the shots about the shoot -- on this sequence. You can barely make out the photographer's leg in the bottom right. Great job! Looks like a fun shoot. First, second and third shots I like the best. I guess I like No. 3 the most.

Very nice Bob, 2nd and 4th for me. The biker even had a certain look to him that works well here.

This is great Bob! I think the one that strikes me the most is image #2. The sky and landscape in the background gives it an "open road" feel.

Thanks, everyone! It's great to see you all enjoying the pics.
A note about the fourth shot ("biker love"): In most of the shots of the biker and the model together on the bike, I had the models clutch onto the biker so there was an obvious tension in her hands, suggesting power and passion. But the young Czech model never seemed to get that idea down. In each of her pics with her holding onto the biker, her hands were relaxed. In the Biker Love image it worked to a degree I hadn't imagined. Instead of a passionate clutch of a hot babe, her touch is more that of a loving angel embracing the man.
Some mistakes are beautiful. ;D

I love 2 and 4 Bob, excellent images. In image one my eyes were initially drawn to the sun rather than the subject. I really liked 1 other than that.
Thanks for sharing these, I like seeing how Alien Bees are used outdoors. I have been thinking about how I can use mine next year outdoors. I'll have to make a modifier change but have not decided to what. Probably a beauty dish.

The other photographer on the shoot used a 22" beauty dish. He said it's the only modifier he ever uses for his main.
Fill, he used a big softbox with a fabric gridspot.
