I've been combing over the specs of the D3s and it is SWEET. It's a bit out of my price range. But, then again, my wife and kids do like macaroni & cheese. Hmmmmm

To rate cameras based on their movie mode is crazy!! We are photographers, not cinematographers. We seek to find the best quality still photograph. If we can do a HD movie from the same platform then so be it. This is a good point, and very well taken. Personally, I've never really looked at the newly popular addition of video capabilities as much more than a sales gimmick. Granted, it would be cool to shoot some video imaging while taking advantage of your SLR glass. In some situations, like a wedding, a few short video snippits might give a photographer more to offer on a DVD than just a slide show. One thing's for sure, cinematographers are NOT flocking to the camera shop to replace their video cameras with DSLR still cameras. The bottom line: Video is a cool feature, but not a significant factor in determining if a camera fit's the needs of a still photographer. In the case of the D3s: ISO 102,400 is INSANELY cool! And, shooting a continuous full-rez burst mode of 9fps to boot? What's not to like? I MUST HAVE ONE

The specs of the D3s are exciting for two reasons: 1) This is now part of the new standard for "ultimate sports camera" and 2) It may signal lowering of D3 prices.
Opinion: Not many people in their right mind will ever be shooting professionally at ISO 102k, but it means they'll be able to shoot cleanly at much higher ISOs than they ever could before. Shooting a gymnastics meet in a poorly-lighted gym or a football game under high school lights will be a cinch at ISO 6,400. Up go those shutter speeds. Down go those apertures. And no longer will we need to spend $14,000 to get that ultra-fast long glass.
Canon people, take heart. The new ISO 102,400 capability will soon be available in the Canon lineup in the EOS 1D MkIV.

That's a pretty good way to put it Greg. I love my nikon, just find it odd some of the things they have been doing lately. I can count on one hand how many times I have used video mode on the D90. With having a 1 year old it would have been nice since I have that mode it would be nice if it had of been complete. My main complain right now is cost going up on equipment that has been out for a few years.

My main complain right now is cost going up on equipment that has been out for a few years. One of the best reasons to be happy with what you have. That way you only need to be concerned with the prices when you have to replace due to age or damage. Other than that, you will constantly drive yourself nuts over the latest and greatest, and what the current prices are. I just read today that Canon has a 7D out...had no idea that was even in the works. I'm not ready to replace the 40D yet, so the 7D makes me excited....simply because I can only imagine what they will have available in a couple more years when I am ready to move into something else.

mainly lenses. things like the 70-200 2.8 (first gen VR) was, at the beginning of the year $1799 and now they are $1949 @ Adorama and B&H sweetened it a little by adding a hoodie $2034. Although I believe the 50mm 1.4 came down about $40.

I wanted to touch on this a little again. The updates in software for the D3s is great. Much like the D90 and D300s the in camera capabilities are awsome and having the added reliability of the D3 just makes it that much more impressive. The extreme ISO from what I am told is gimmicky at best, the noise being an issue at the same levels as the older D3. I use my info button constantly and while on the D90 and D300s this feature is on the right side, on the D3s it is on the left. To me this is a brilliant idea because I like to have thumb and for finger on the main and sub dials. Giving me the ability to use my left thumb for the main button selections such as iso, wb, etc. All is all with the exception of the video mode addition, this seems to be a great upgrade while we wait for the D4 in two years.
