You hit on the key to a successful website. You have to have an element that keeps people coming back. The pictures will seldom be enough in today's add society. Try having something in place that serves as a current events element. You want people wondering about what is new with northerncalimages.com and returning for that.
That is why I have my Photo Trek journal, the New Additions page, and several of the features that I run. The Tips and Tricks as well as the Photographer Spotlight were started to bump up my search engine ratings. The Behind the Camera feature is a chance for viewers to read a little about just one of my pictures as opposed to the entire photo shoot. There is always something changing, and all of the updates appeal to different audiences.
With that in mind, I also do a waterfall directory so that people doing internet searches on waterfalls in the area (shows they have an interest in the subject) will hit on my site. They click over to read about a specific waterfall and they see a picture of mine...they become interested and find my gallery within two clicks.
You have the opportunity to do something similar since you are so familiar with the area you are in. Whether it be waterfalls, or beaches...pick out something that you would consider a specific passion and do some sort of directory on it. You will have content rich pages that the search engines love. The best part is that if they are searching say Burney Falls, you have caught the attention of someone who is interested in the falls. They are more likely to purchase a print from that contact since there is already the specific interest.
